Creating headlines that are relevant to readers is a task that all print copy writers have faced over the past century. A large body of knowledge exist that can be applied. Much of this came from Sears in their early catalog development. Sears ran multiple headlines and graphics in controlled experimentation. Response levels were monitored to develop copy and graphic rules.

The cost of testing within the web environment is much cheaper and should be part of any web development plans. The simple way to do this is to systematically make changes to key page elements and determine how the rate of visitor responses changes using the site visitor tracking package provided by most server services. For example I plan on systematically testing various recipe descriptions to determine which descriptions generate the greatest percentage of visitor clicks to the specific recipe within the site. The key is not to vary more than one core element at a time and maintaining base behavior data to compare the changes with. This is as important as search engine optimization efforts for evolving a successful website.

Week 12 Spry Menu

This links to my experimentation with Spry menu. It was promising because the multiple menu could simplify user search through mutiple levels of recipes for the class project. I am concerned with how the spry menu can be integrated with the Firework menu buttons. Any class inputs would be welcomed.

A problem that I did not resolve was the arrow change. While I did import an arrow successfully from Fireworks, it does not show up in F12 within DW, but does show up with URL posting.

These are the revised comps for the recipe site. The only thing lacking in the png file are disjointed rollovers. They not included because it is not clear how they will be imported if the spry menu option is also used. Look forward to solutions as spry’s multiple menu bar looks promising.

Week 11 Export Layers Exercise

This seemed easier than other means of transferring Firework comps to Dreamweaver. However, rollovers and other Firework active links do not make the move. How do we replicate a rollover, or other Firework interactive in Dreamworks. The menu list and radio bar is one answer. Are there others that I have forgotten?

There must a file link problem in my site organization. I could not see these files in f12 within Dreamweaver until they were loaded onto the potomac url. They are cool, but too few regular web users have the plug-ins yet in my target group.

Recipe Project comps

This is a revised home page and the first recipe page. I would appreciate comments and inputs. Note that the picture in the top left hand corner will change with each recipe, and change as one hovers over the navbars. The salmon recipe bar will lead to five other salmon recipe descriptions on a separate page that then links to the individual recipes. The fish recipes navbar will drop down to six subclasses of fish (tuna, sole, shrimp, etc.) with the subbar leading to a page of three to eight recipe descriptions for each subtype. The general recipe bar leads to a semi-sitemap of categories and subtypes.
